Kuwait plans to build a national rail network and a metro system at a cost of around $11.4 billion, Eng. Saeed Dashti the chairman of the Kuwait Overland Transport Union who was given the job of drawing up the plans for the two projects said. The national railway system will be 518 kilometres (324 miles) long and is planned to link a proposed 2,000-kilometre (1,250-mile) Gulf railway line with Iraq, Iran and beyond.

It will link the Saudi border in the south with the Iraqi border in the north, besides linking the east and west points in the country. The project is estimated to cost around 1.8 billion dinars ($6.6 billion) and will be implemented by the private sector. The Kuwait Rapid Transit System will be 171 kilometres (107 miles) long and will cover the country.
